Physio For You

The facts: the hidden side of physiotherapy.

One would be forgiven that physiotherapy is for injured athletes and sufferers of back pain. This is a popular misconception; physiotherapy is an effective treatment for a wide range of conditions including neurological disorders such as stroke, aneurism, brain injuries, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries and Parkinson’s disease.

Neurological physiotherapy is based on the brain/spinal cord’s lifelong ability to reorganise (Neuroplasticity). In other word, this characteristic allows healthy parts of the brain/spinal cord to learn and to take on the functions which were previously carried out by the damaged regions of the brain/spinal cord.

However, this re-organisation doesn’t happen by magic, it takes work. Neurological physiotherapy provides specifically targeted stimulation of the brain/spinal cord through moving and activating limbs and muscles. This directed movement stimulates the brain/spinal cord to reorganise itself in the most efficient and functional way.

It’s also important to realise that neurological conditions can potentially deteriorate without regular treatment.

One of the most important approaches to rehabilitation in the care of neurological patients is the Bobath concept, named after its inventors Berta and Karel Bobath. They have created a holistic and hands on approach which promotes better control, variety and efficiency of movement in order to retrain the skills needed in the patient’s daily life.

Following assessment the Bobath therapist designs a specific rehabilitation program for the patient incorporating a series of specific targets and realistic goals which the patient and the physiotherapist will work towards.

With commitment positive results can always be achieved.
