Disaster avoided at Carrigrohane

The height and strength of the water flowing across the fields at Inniscarra and Carrigrohane was so intense that it breasted walls and in some places where walls have stood for over one hundred years it succeeded it driving breeches through them. A torrent of water the like of which has never in living memory been seen, swept a car through a wall and into a field adjacent to the river at Carrigrohane. The car could be seen the following day lying upended in at least eight feet of water. Luckily the occupants of the car managed to escape.

On the same stretch of road between the Carrigrohane Bridge and Leemount Cross, an adventurous Polish-man endeavored to cross over this torrent which freely flowed across the road. His bicycle was swept from under him and he was carried by the flood through through the breech in the wall towards the river. Luckily he managed to grab hold of a tree, and pulling himself up he screamed for help. A lady in Carrigrohane about one hundred metres distant heard his cries for help and alerted the authorities, who eventually managed to rescue him.
